I think so often when we envision family photos we think of perfect outfits, and rivers, and fields. And, don’t get me wrong, I ADORE those shoots. But I also think there’s something special about a more “documentary” approach. I say documentary with quotations because I fully realize I am not a true documentary photographer. I love tweaking the scene too much to be one. But a more LIFEstyle approach than lifeSTYLE if you will.
I have documented this family for a few years now, but this year we took a different approach. Instead of heading out to some idyllic location, we met at their home. We explored what they do and who they are as a family. From the back alley they play in, to their garden patches. From the guitar lessons father gives to son, to their simplified living space.
They are focusing on growing where they are planted and removing distractions that cause us to miss moments. We celebrated who they are and their passion for life and what it means to truly live. We documented THEM.
