Documenting Baby's First Year

Course Description:

I think every parent has the best intentions of documenting their “Little One’s” first EVERYTHING, but how do we do it WELL? How do we end up with timeless images that we can return to again & again instead of 150,000 photos taking up space on our phone that we have to sift through to find our favorites?

In this course, we’ll look at helpful tips for documenting the classic shots everyone wants, as well as looking at less obvious, but more meaningful moments. We’ll explore creative ways to get everyone (including you!) in the frame, and pinpoint small changes you can make to capture your photos (even ones on your phone) to the next level. Laura will walk you through her full editing workflow – also sharing a behind-the-scenes shooting video on documenting her 11-month old portraits, as well as working siblings into the frame.

  • The Classics: Newborn Photos, Monthly Photo Sessions, & The Big-One-Year and Cake-Smash

  • Memories & Milestones: Firsts & Lasts | More Than A Snapshot, Storytelling Elements, Holidays & Traditions

  • The Overlooked Everyday: Finding Beauty in the Routine, Chaos, and Mess of Motherhood

  • Relationships: Extended Family, Immediate Family – Dad, Immediate Family – Siblings, Immediate Family – All Together, and You & Baby

  • Watch Me Edit & Assignments: Go behind the scenes with Laura as she walks you step by step through her editing workflow process and a sneak into her 11-month old session!

Mastering Skin Tones Mini Course

Course Description:

There are probably few things photographers spend more time obsessing over when editing than skin tones. Are they too cool, too warm, too green? How do I know if these are even “right?!”

This mini course was designed to answer those exact questions. It contains the “math” behind nice clean tones (yes, there are actual numbers that can help you – it’s not all just blind guessing!), as well as activities to help you learn to train your eye.

Laura will take you through her editing workflow, not only so you can see how she edits, but also so you can see in what order to adjust your setting to help you achieve nice skin tones with as little headache as possible. She’ll discuss troubleshooting through issues like multiple skin tones in one image and dealing with color casts, as well as taking you behind the scenes on a mini shoot with her and her boys to show you how she spots locations to set herself up for a clean edit.

  • Getting Started: calibration, in-camera settings, Lightroom vs. ACR & Photostop

  • Editing by Numbers: do the math; skin numbers in Lightroom & Photoshop, temperature, tint, presets, HSL & exposure

  • How to Shoot “Clean”: how to deal with color casts & manage multiple skin tones! SCORE!!!

  • Houston we have a Problem: TROUBLESHOOTING; the most important things to know about skin tones!

  • Watch Me Edit & Assignments: Go behind the scenes with Laura as she walks you step by step through her perfect skin tone process (and don’t forget the bonus assignments!!)

What’s Included:

  • 50-page downloadable e-book; and

  • Watch Laura edit her beautiful skin-toned images with 3 editing videos and 1 behind-the-scenes shooting video.

Off-Camera Flash 101 (Next Run November 9th, 2020)

Course Description:

If thinking about off-camera flash fills with you uncertainty, or worse, makes you think of harsh, “flashy” light, this workshop is here to remedy that! If you are frustrated that you can’t seem to achieve a natural look, this workshop is for you. If you are intimidated because you have never even fired a flash before, this workshop is still for you!

We start at the very beginning to establish a firm foundation. During Week One, we will be looking at how your gear goes together and troubleshooting through various set-up issues. We then move on to understanding your flash settings and how to control its power. We will explore using your flash both as a primary light in your images as well as a fill light supplementing existing ambient.

In Week Two, we will explore the relationship between camera settings and your flash, learning how to control the power of your flash by adjusting those settings. We will hone in on the quality of your light while unpacking how flash placement and various modifiers can create contrasting looks. We will troubleshoot through avoiding harsh shadows and ensure that you have flattering light placement on your subjects. Lastly we will look at editing techniques for bounced flash, modified flash, and bare flash to help enhance that natural look.

There will be numerous exercises and assignments for both practice and feedback throughout the weeks to encourage questions and solidify newly learned skills. In addition to three editing videos, there will also be FIVE behind-the-scenes videos! You will watch me set up my gear, work through technical issues, and shoot in three very different lighting situations.

PLEASE NOTE: This workshop will be offered twice a year only and will NOT be offered as a Download & Go in between Live Runs.
